October 9, 2007: Director Education Roundtable Series (Fall 2007)
Executive Roundtable Invitation: Diversifying the American Board
This is the third in a series of programs created by Deloitte & Touche LLP. These educational events are designed for senior executives who are interested in joining corporate boards, as well as nominating committee members who are interested in meeting potential board members.
The session began with an address from Ira Millstein, partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and the Director of the Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance at Yale School of Management. Mr. Millstein was followed by an interactive panel discussion: Crisis Management – Is Your Board Ready? The way the management and the board respond to a crisis can drastically change the future of a company. History has shown that even experienced directors can fall victim to poor judgement in the face of a bet-the-company crisis. An experienced panel explored strategies for keeping the situation under control. Our panelists included: Shelia Birnbaum, Partner, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, & Flom LLP; Leader, Product Liability Group Ann Mule, Chief Governance Officer, Assistant General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Sunoco, Inc. Laurie Shahon, President and Founder, Wilton Capital Group; Director, Knight Capital Group, The Bombay Company, Eddie Bauer Holdings, and Kitty Hawk Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, Senior Associate Dean for Executive Programs & Adjunct Professor of Management for the Yale School of Management; Director of TheStreet.com, Inc., Gevity HR, Inc., and Lennar Corporation. A networking reception followed the formal program.
